10 Honest Tips (straight from the coach) for The Pups Audition

So you want to audition for the Pups?

Well props to you! It takes a lot of courage to dance your heart out and literally be judged for it. You are already on a good path for growth by putting yourself in an uncomfortable and challenging situation where you’ll learn so much about dance and yourself.

Below you’ll find some tips I believe would be helpful before stepping into the studio:

  1. Be on your best behavior because you will be observed from the moment you step into the studio. You’ll be judged on how fast you learn, how respectful you are, your work ethic, and your final performance in the small groups.
  2. Stay focused. The audition is not a class, daycare, or recess. We are looking for the best of the best. It’s ok to bring your buddy along, but make sure you don’t distract each other.
  3. Got any tricks? Show them off during the freestyle section of the audition. Whether you know how to do the splits, an aerial, or breaking power moves – we want to see what you got!
  4. Don’t have any tricks? Don’t sweat it. Just because you can’t do a flip doesn’t mean you won’t be considered for the team. Show us your own super power. Maybe it’s learning choreography super fast or having amazing facial expressions.
  5. Don’t worry about forgetting parts of the choreography or making a mistake. Just don’t give up. Yes, dance skills are an important factor, but a hardworking and positive mindset is just as important. Judges tend to cheer for those who push themselves and don’t give up.
  6. Don’t be too hard on yourself. The audition process is meant to be challenging! We don’t want to just give our dancers what they already know. We want to push them to always level up and be their best.
  7. Wear something comfortable that shows your personality! Whether you wear something colorful or something baggy, we want to see who you are. Fresh new clothes are cute, but can you really move in it? Ultimately, make sure you’re comfortable.
  8. Each judge looks for something different. Here’s what I look for: natural swag, professionalism, strong and clean movement, facial expressions, character, and confidence.
  9. If you don't make the team, take time to feel what you feel and then do something about it. Figure out what you need to work on and solidify what your strengths are. Be honest with yourself. Make goals and then make the necessary baby steps it takes to get there. Take dance workshops, be consistent with your training, and ask for feedback and help. In the moment of rejection, it's really hard to see the bigger picture, but honestly - with the right mindset - you grow the most from failure and hardship. If you're still in the age bracket, audition next year. We'd love to see how much you've grown.
  10. Have fun. Do you love to dance? Yes? Then you're in the right place. Make us feel what you feel. Share your joy of dancing with the world!
